Climate Change Alliance of Botanic Gardens
About the Climate Change Alliance of Botanic Gardens
The Climate Change Alliance of Botanic Gardens was established in response to the urgent need to protect and adapt botanical landscapes and living plant collections to climate change. Hosted by Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, this network now represents nearly 600 members in over 100 countries, has launched several climate adaptation tools, and elevated the discussion around climate change and botanic gardens from talking to action. The Climate Change Alliance of Botanic Gardens accepts all who need these tools, including local government, urban forestry, natural resource management and all landscape managers. Demand for these services only increases.
How you can help
Support is needed to engage expert consultants to develop a 10-year business plan and marketing strategy for the Alliance. $300,000 will ensure this future-facing global movement can sustainably grow.
Overseen by an international steering committee, your support will help activate and unite horticulturalists from around the world in the fight against climate change through practical strategies to build resilient living collections.
Why is this project needed?
Climate change is threatening biodiversity around the world and botanic gardens deliver a critical function as custodians of critically needed scientific and horticultural knowledge. As living collections, botanic gardens are essentially zoos and libraries for plants playing a vital role in conservation of biodiversity.
In the next 50 years, academics estimate 20-50% of current plant species in botanic gardens and urban landscapes will likely confront temperatures those species have never experienced before. RBGV are addressing this risk through preservation and adaptation activities however not all botanic gardens have access to critical knowledge needed for resilience.
