Lightscape to return to Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne

The much-loved illuminated natural wonderland to return in winter 2023

Returning in 2023 after a sell-out season, Lightscape, an extraordinary, after-dark experience at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, is back with a brand new trail from 16 June to 6 August 2023.

Immersed in light, colour, reflection and music, the all-new 2.1km trail will take visitors through the green heart of Melbourne. Expect stunning lakeside reflections, colour-changing installations, large-scale illuminated sculptures and new surprises along the way with over 100,000 tiny lights.

In 2023, the trail of light and sound will include never before seen artworks along with the impressive Winter Cathedral that was a crowd favourite when it debuted earlier this year. The popular welcome zone filled with Melbourne’s best food trucks and pop-up bars is also returning.

Following enormous successes in the UK and US, Lightscape, created in partnership with Sony Music Entertainment, made its debut in Melbourne earlier in 2022 and was an overwhelming success, quickly becoming a highlight of Melbourne’s winter activities.

The event was developed at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in the UK 11 years ago and has been an overwhelming success since, with more than two million people experiencing the illuminated trails at various venues last season.

Since its inception, it has been showcased at botanic gardens, National Trust and UNESCO World Heritage sites across the UK and US to great acclaim.

Lightscape was an overwhelming success earlier this year and we are delighted that this world-class event is returning to Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne so that Victorians can again enjoy our Gardens in a whole new light,” said Professor Tim Entwisle, Director and Chief Executive, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.

Joni Marks, Chief Development Director, RGL (Raymond Gubbay Limited), a division of Sony Music Entertainment said “We are delighted to be returning to Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne with Lightscape. Melbourne has one of the finest botanic gardens in the world and working alongside our production partners, Culture Creative, we are excited to present the Gardens in a completely new way to both repeat visitors – of which we know there will be many - and first-time visitors.”
