Sapphire McMullan-Fisher

Sapphire McMullan-Fisher

As a mycologist, Sapphire has extensive experience as a field mycologist and ecologist, and strong connections with naturalist clubs, Landcare and other restoration groups across Australia with an interest in fungi. Her current project is focused on a review of Australian Crepidotus [Link: new project page] including barcoding local species and producing an image rich draft key to eastern Australian taxa.

In the past she has collaborated with taxonomists and field mycologists to increase the availability of identification tools to understand Australian Fungi. Including work on the FunKey – Key to Waxcaps [Link:] an interactive key for mushroom identification. This project drew on her skills as a mycologist, scientific communicator and volunteer manager to develop an identification tool that will help taxonomists and fungal enthusiasts alike.

Sapphire is also an ecologist who has special interest in the conservation of biodiversity, particularly macrofungi and mosses. She did her doctorate at the University of Tasmania on ‘Surrogates for cryptogam conservation - associations between mosses, macrofungi, vascular plants and environmental variables.’
