Database Officer (Foreign Collection Project)
Luke is responsible for databasing the global plant collection as part of the Foreign Collection Project at the National Herbarium of Victoria (MEL) at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. The global collection comprises an estimated 400,000 specimens collected outside Australia from the 17th Century to the present day and includes some of the earliest scientifically-recorded botanical collections from India, China, Southern Africa, the Americas and the Pacific. It has a particularly high percentage (~5%) of type specimens and includes many significant collections by notable botanists from around the world.
The information contained in the valuable global collection is being databased to allow researchers worldwide to access it. All databased specimens from MEL’s global collection are accessible on the Australasian Virtual Herbarium, and type specimens are accessible via Global Plants on JSTOR.
