Restoring the home of a historic icon
We are happy to announce that we have received $250,000 from the Coalition Government to reopen the roof of Great Melbourne Telescope, one of the great scientific instruments of the Victorian era.
The funding has been awarded as part of the Protecting National Historic Sites program, designed for historic sites listed on the National Heritage List.
This funding moves us a step closer to returning the Great Melbourne Telescope to its rightful home in Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria’s observatory precinct. This generous grant is a welcome injection for an ambitious project to restore Great Melbourne Telescope House and brings us closer the $4 million required to finish the project for public enjoyment.
Melbourne will marvel when the repaired roof is rolled back to reveal this stunning telescope, currently being restored by Museums Victoria and Astronomical Society of Victoria volunteers.
