Water conservation at the Royal Botanic Gardens

Every drop counts
download pdf brochure

Since 1995 the Royal Botanic Gardens has led the way in water conservation for large landscapes.

RBG Melbourne is recognised as one of the world’s finest botanic gardens. There are over 10,000 species and 50,000 individual plants in the 38 hectare gardens, including trees and plants of great cultural value. Many of these plants are irreplaceable, endangered or even extinct in the wild. It is important that the survival of these plants is guaranteed by an adequate supply of water.

Plant Census

Find out what plants grow at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne

The latest application of digital technology at the Gardens is found in the online plant census.

Now publicly available on the Gardens' website, the plant census provides records on over 50,000 individual plants representing 10,000 species held in 19 collections in RBG Melbourne's living collection - a record that is automatically updated daily with ‘real time' changes as they are made to the Living Collections Database.

Previously, members of the public have only been able to view the plant census by trawling through an annual publication - effectively a 500-page tome of a census book or, more accurately described, data print out - at the Visitor Centre. Read More 'Floreo 2008'

The water features are back on in the Children's Garden!

South East Water has recently approved the Royal Botanic Garden's application to activate the water features in The Ian Potter Foundation Children's Garden.

In doing this they are recognising that the water features are integral to the Children's Garden design, creating diverse opportunities for creative play and learning.

The water features also facilitate the delivery of visitor and education programs where water and water conservation are central themes.

Come in and enjoy!

Please remember:

  • For safety and hygiene reasons we request the children be clothed at all times.
  • Adults are responsible for actively supervising children and keeping them safe while in this garden.
