Sandra started Botanic Illustration classes at the Royal Botanic Gardens seven years ago. Since then as her skills have developed she has become more observant about the subject she is painting and its characteristics. This has helped Sandra to become more aware of and better informed about her own environment and those she visits in her travels and also complements her experiences as a keen bushwalker with a love of the outdoors and of nature. It is often from these experiences that Sandra gains an appreciation of and knowledge about the subject she chooses to paint. The Wollemi pine selected for this exhibition interested Sandra because of its links to the past and its discovery in the wild and the efforts made to preserve and protect it. It is also a tree she has chosen as a tribute to the memory of Matthew Wallis-Smith whose love of the environment and concern for it were such an important part of his life.
