Margaret Muffet

Born in Colac and living her early years in the Otway Ranges at Kawarren, Margaret grew up loving the natural surroundings of the Australian bush especially the wild flowers. Her love of art led her to botanical exhibitions running concurrently in Melbourne in 1996, Margaret Stones, Jenny Phillips and The Art of Botanical Illustration at the Herbarium. This was a major turning point in Martaret's art practice. Until the Melbourne experience she had been working on botanical specimens in pencil and colour pencil. After seeking out Jenny and attending her Botanical Art School one day per week for a year, Margaret decided to concentrate on botanical painting, with Jenny's guidance she chose to paint a series of 'Protea' and work toward exhibiting in London. Margaret completed 10 studies of the Protea and in June 2002 flew to Birmingham. She was awarded the Silver-Gilt medal in the Grenfell medal range at the recent Royal Horticultural Society of London's Exhibition in Birmingham where 27 artists from all over Europe displayed their paintings. This allowed Margaret to see where her work stood within the world arena. At present Margaret is working on another series for London in February and has just received mail from the Hunt Institute to inform her that they are interested in one of her Protea paintings and have invited her to enter for selection in the 2004 International Exhibition.
