This two-day symposium and field trips will communicate successful on-ground management and research under way in south-eastern Australia, drawing on the work of a wide range of individuals and organisations currently contributing to orchid conservation, particularly in Victoria. Speakers will include scientific staff from Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, RMIT University the University of Melbourne, Royal Melbourne Zoo, Parks Victoria, and the Australasian Native Orchid Society.

Topics will cover:

  • ecological aspects of orchid conservation;
  • on ground management of orchid populations;
  • recent taxonomic work;
  • horticultural research and advances in orchid cultivation techniques;
  • understanding orchid-mycorrhizal relationships;
  • community participation in orchid conservation projects; and
  • conservation genetics and molecular biology.

Keynote speakers will be Dr Kingsley Dixon from Kings Park and Botanic Garden, Perth and Dr Graham Mitchell, one of NRE's Chief Scientists .
