Seedbank Co-ordinator/Identifications Botanist

jeff.jeanes

Jeff is the co-ordinator of the Victorian Conservation Seedbank, which is the local arm of the international Millennium Seed Bank Project. This job involves the collection, cleaning and germination testing of seeds from native Victorian plants, focusing on rare, threatened and indigenous species. These seeds will be used as required for research as well as habitat and species restoration work. Jeff also works as an Identification Botanist focusing mainly on indigenous and naturalised vascular plants of Victoria. His research interests include the taxonomy of native orchids particularly members of the large, principally Australian, genus Thelymitra (Sun Orchids). He has published several journal papers, resolving various species complexes within Thelymitra including the identification and description of many new species. This work has also resulted in the submission of a taxonomic revision of the genus for the Flora of Australia. Jeff has also worked on the family Ranunculaceae and is co-author of this family in the Flora of Australia. He is also part of a team looking at the taxonomy, fruit and seed morphology and germination response in Australian members of the genus Melicytus (Tree Violets).
