Providing leadership in plant biodiversity research and conservation

One of the fundamental roles of the Royal Botanic Gardens is furthering knowledge about, and fostering the conservation of, Australia’s plant biodiversity, through research in taxonomy (the naming and classifying of organisms), systematics (the study of relationships between groups of organisms) and ecology.

As the key scientific institution within Victoria focusing on the documentation of plant biodiversity, the Royal Botanic Gardens is an invaluable resource, underpinning plant science research and conservation throughout Victoria and significantly contributing to the management of the State’s natural resources.
