List of charges

All charges include 10% GST. Payments in person are made to the Identifications Officer. In these instances credit card facilities are not available. For specimens received through the mail an invoice will be sent. The Identifications Officer may waive or reduce charges if the material received is of benefit to the collections of the National Herbarium of Victoria, for instance new records of native plants or weeds. All rates include time taken in the preparation of specimens prior to identification and time taken for all communication.

Over the counter

  • $11 per specimen or inquiry. If the identification takes more than 15 minutes a charge of $99 per hour will apply on a pro rata basis.
  • Urgent work will attract an additional charge of 60 % of the normal rates. Thus charges for urgent identification are $17.60 per specimen or $158.40 per hour if the identification takes more than 15 minutes. The turnover time for urgent identification is 7-10 days from the day arrangement is made. The availability of this service is subject to time constraints and can only be undertaken by prior arrangement between the client and the Identifications Botanist.
  • Mail

  • For specimens sent through the mail or other instances where an invoice is required, there is a minimum charge of $16.50. Otherwise mail rates are as per over the counter rates.
  • Use of Identifications facilities

  • Independent use (i.e. without botanist assistance) of the facilities of the Identifications and Information room can be hired for $66 per day or $33 for half a day. Assistance by a botanist is only available by prior arrangement and will be charged at the rate of $99 per hour. The reference collection includes both native and naturalised plants of Victoria.
  • NOTE: Normal turnover time for plant identifications is 3-6 weeks. These time lines are dependent on availability of staff time. Urgent work can only be undertaken by prior arrangement between the client and the Identifications Botanist.
