About the Interactive Catalogue of Australian Fungi

abrsRBG MelbourneAbout the Interactive Catalogue of Australian Fungi

The Interactive Catalogue of Australian Fungi is a joint project of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and the Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS).

The Interactive Catalogue runs from a database maintained by Tom May at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. The database was originally derived from the printed version of the Catalogue and Bibliography of Australian Fungi, published in the Fungi of Australia series, by the ABRS. Full data from Fungi of Australia Volume 2A has been entered. Partial data from Volume 2B has recently been added, pending publication of the volume, and data from further volumes will be entered as they are published. The database was developed at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne through a grant from the ABRS.

The Interactive Catalogue will include all records from the Catalogue and Bibliography of Australian Fungi as well as corrections, additions, and changes to the taxonomy of fungi that have occurred subsequent to its publication.

The Interactive Catalogue presently covers in full the following Orders of Basidiomycota: Agaricales, Agaricostilbales, Atractiellales, Auriculariales, Boletales, Bondarzewiales, Cantharellales, Cortinariales, Dacrymycetales, Fistulinales, Ganodermatales, Gomphales, Hericiales, Hymenochaetales, Hymenogastrales, Lachnocladiales, Lycoperdales, Melanogastrales, Nidulariales, Phallales, Platygoeales, Poriales, Russulales, Sclerodermatales, Septobasidiales, Stereales, Thelephorales, Tremellales, Tulasnellales and Tulostomatales. Full coverage is also provided for the following Orders of Myxomycota: Acrasiales, Ceratiomyxales, Dictyosteliales, Echinosteliales, Liceales, Physarales, Protosteliales, Stemonitales and Trichiales.

Entries for taxa in selected groups (mainly Agaricales, Boletales, Cortinariales and Russulales) which are associated with Eucalyptus outside of Australia are also included.

Catalogue and Bibliography of Australian Fungi

The Catalogue and Bibliography of Australian Fungi is published by the ABRS in the Fungi of Australia series. The compilation of the Catalogue has been assisted by grants from the ABRS.

The first volume of the Catalogue was published in 1997 as Fungi of Australia Volume 2A, by Dr Tom May and Dr Alec Wood. Tom is Senior Mycologist at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, where he specialises in the taxonomy, ecology and conservation of Australian macrofungi and curates the fungal collection. Alec is a Visiting Fellow, School of Biological Science, University of New South Wales, where he has worked for many years on the taxonomy and biology of macrofungi. Their collaboration on the volume began in 1980. The volume covers the agaricoid, boletoid and cantharelloid macrofungi, and their gasteroid relatives.

The second volume of the Catalogue was published in 2003. This volume covers all other groups of macrofungi in the Basidiomycota and Myxomycota.

The third volume of the Catalogue is in preparation, and will cover the Ascomycota, Chytridiomycota, Hyphochytriomycota, Oomycota, and microfungal groups of the Basidiomycota and Myxomycota.

Technical Details

The interactive catalogue has been designed and developed by Peter Neish and Tom May at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. All pages are generated dynamically using PHP as the scripting engine and MySQL as the back end database.
