Seed collectors
The seed collectors gather seed for the Cranbourne Gardens seed stock and for the Growing Friends nursery.
The peak time for this group is November to March. Most of the sessions for the group are on weekends and go for about 2 and 3 hours. Thursday is also a convenient day to meet; some of us are also part of the Thursday Growing Friends group.
Sessions have involved a range of activities; reconnaissance walks to identify what is ready or close to maturity for collecting, some collection and some processing of material collected. We have visited a wide range of sites in the RBG Cranbourne bushland over the last few years and we document what we have collected.
The seed collected can be used by the Growing Friends and by the Gardens for regeneration of the bushland. All processed seed is entered on the Cranbourne Gardens seed database.
Cali Salzmann from the Gardens nursery has been terrific as a guide and trainer for our sessions, which are seen as 'training' a small group to be eventually self-sufficient, in both the collection and processing of seed.
We are a small group. New members would be most welcome. Most of our communication is via email, so please contact Richenda Harrison richendaharrison@gmail.com if you are interested in joining the seed-collecting group.
Recent news
Our thanks go to Shirley Smith, who has done a wonderful job in getting the Seed Collectors group started, and rolling along so well. As you will note from the contact details above, Richenda Harrison has taken over the coordination of the group, so please contact her if you are interested in joining this rewarding and fascinating project.
