Nareeb Gates

The Nareeb Gates were constructed in England and stood at ‘Nareeb’ estate in Toorak for 60 years. They were bequeathed to the National Trust of Australia by the owners and erected at the D Gate entrance to the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne (RBG Melbourne) in 1966. They were officially declared open on the 15 November 1967.

The Nareeb Gates were constructed in England and stood for 60 years at the entrance to ‘Nareeb’ estate in Toorak, the home of Mr and Mrs Walter Simmons and their family. Their daughter, Miss Gertrude Simmons, bequeathed them to the National Trust of Australia (Victoria).

The Nareeb Gates were erected at RBG Melbourne in 1966 by the Trust, with the help of the Government of Victoria and officially declared open by The Honorable Sir William McDonald MP, Minister of Lands, on the 15 November 1967.

The ornate lights on top of the Nareeb Gates were powered by gas for many years.
