The Gardens are centrally located approximately 2 km from the centre of Melbourne.

Public Transport and City Tourist Shuttle

Public transport from outside the CBD:

  • Take a train to Flinders Street Station

Trams from Flinders Street:

  • Head south along St Kilda Road. Trams 3, 5, 8, 16, 64, or 67 follow this route
  • After an 8 minute journey, depart tram at stop number 20, Domain Road Interchange.
  • Walk east up the hill towards the Shrine of Remembrance
  • Cross Birdwood Avenue and walk towards the Observatory Buildings.
  • Welcome to the Gardens. The Visitor Centre (link to Visitor Centre operating hours) is located here and is a good starting point.

City Tourist Shuttle

The free Melbourne City Tourist Shuttle stops at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. The Shuttle completes a circuit around Melbourne and runs every 30 minutes between 9.30 – 4.30 pm daily. You can hop on and hop off at any of the 15 stops, including the Royal Botanic Gardens/ Shrine of Remembrance, which is Stop 13.

By car

The Gardens is surrounded by roads and generally, it is fairly easy to find parking close to 1 of the 11 entry gates. However, the Gardens are located close to a variety of major Melbourne event venues and traffic and parking conditions will vary according to event schedules.

Lots of 2, 3 and 4 hour parking is available. The City of Melbourne operates ticket machines and enforces parking restrictions in the area. Disabled parking bays are marked on the Gardens map.

By bicycle

Designated bicycle paths along the Yarra River and Melbourne CBD lead to the Gardens from the city centre. The Melbourne travelsmart map  provides comprehensive information on bike paths. Dedicated bicycle parking is available at Observatory Gate.
