Botanic illustrators
The Botanical Illustrators meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month from 10am to 3pm in the Maud Gibson Room (which is near the RBG Cranbourne Office). It is a small, friendly group and anyone interested is welcome to call in and visit us during those times.
Joan Mason exhibited at Art of Botanical Illustration; Callistemon macropunctatus (scarlet callistemon)
Our group get-togethers, made up of artists of varying experience, allow us to share ideas, information and give each other encouragement and support. The group holds exhibitions at various galleries.
Many of our members were included in the recent Eucalypts of the Royal Botanic Gardens and Natures Small Wonders Exhibition held at Domain House. Congratulations go to Sandra Sanger who coordinated the exhibition, which was beautifully presented and full of fabulous paintings. Several of our members made successful sales. Robin Allison’s pen and ink drawing of the tawny frogmouths, who were residing in the eucalypt next to the Maud Gibson Room, was purchased by Brian Little.
Two of our group recently travelled to Menindee to participate in a Burke and Wills project involving botanic artists, photographers, a film maker, a botanist and a botanical historian. We were collecting and then painting the same plants at the same time of the year as did Herman Beckler, the botanist who collected on the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition. Beckler collected about 120 plants in all. The project is in its second year and will continue next year.

++Botanical Art Classes
Botanical Art Classes are held from 10am to 3pm in the Maud Gibson Room (which is near the RBG Cranbourne Office). There are two classes:
- on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month (during school term)
- on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month (during school term)
Our tutor, Margaret Holloway, has had considerable experience teaching at secondary, tertiary and community levels. She has won several awards with her botanical work and is represented in several collections, including the State Botanical Collection.
The maximum class size is 10, ensuring individual attention. It is suitable for beginners or artists with some experience. Fees are $180 for members and $200 for non-members.
Update
Classes have started again with some new students joining the ongoing artists. The current problem with myrtle rust will restrict our subject matter, but we will still have plenty to do. Congratulations must go to the students for being accepted to exhibit their work at the City of Casey exhibition space at the Shire offices towards the end of the year. This reflects the standard of work they have achieved. Dates will be in the newsletter closer to the event.
