- For Kids
Rain Dance begins at Cranbourne
The Education team at Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne has launched Rain Dance, a brand new education program for kids aged 4 – 7.
Rain Dance is based on the children’s book of the same name by Cathy Applegate. The program was developed with the support of the Organisation Mondiale pour l'Education Prescolaire (OMEP; which translates in English as ‘World Organisation for Early Childhood Education’), an international, non-government organisation founded in 1948 to benefit children under eight years of age throughout the world.
The program aims to provide a fun introduction to the Australian Garden and the outdoors, explore the idea that water is central to life, and improve motor and rhythm skills.
Students summon up the feel of a storm with music and dance, get creative with water painting, investigate colour and the diversity of the landscape around them, splash in the Rockpool Waterway, and pot up their own drought tolerant native plant to take home.
As Mick Robertson, Education Co-ordinator at Cranbourne, explains “Rain Dance will encourage young ones to think about the magic of water - how it goes around, where it comes from and where it goes.“
“But really, it’s about having fun with water, and we all know how much fun it is mucking around with water!” said Mick.
For the 24 pre-school students from Cooinda Pre-school who recently trialled this new program, it was a chance to engage the senses and have some fun outdoors. Comments from the students included:
“We picked up shells and more shells to make rain. I liked the water painting and I like the flowers and the shells.” Steve, 4 years old
“I loved it when we were jumping around the puddles and I loved it when we were going across the bridge. I liked when I was making rain using the watering can.” Hayley, 5 years old
