Department of Sustainability and Environment (Victoria)

The Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment  successfully manages the Victorian Threatened Orchid Recovery Program.

The implementation of recovery plans for threatened orchid species involves monitoring orchid populations and understanding population dynamics, identifying threats, working with land managers to alleviate threats to populations, ensuring storage of seed and mycorrhizal fungi, management of ex situ populations and where necessary developing and implementing reintroduction programs.

The Department liaises with horticultural researchers and co-supervises and provides support to honours and postgraduate research students. Funding is provided for the Orchid Conservation Officer, based at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, as well as technical support and advice.
