Timber at the Visitor Centre

The timber decking used at the Visitor Centre is Sugar Gum which has been seasoned, dressed, and finished with 2 coats of transparent timber sealant.The timber used at the Visitor Centre is Silvertop Ash (Eucalyptus sieberi) which was sourced from managed forests in the Central Gippsland region. These areas are managed for timber resources and have been logged before, producing what is known as "regrowth timber" as opposed to plantation timber. The mill is located in Yarram, near Wilson's Promontory. The radial milling of the saw logs provides for less wastage from each log, and a more uniform timber graining, which leads to less shrinkage and splitting as the timber seasons.

Timber bench tops in Visitor Centre and The Gardens Shop

These bench tops are made from 25 mm thick Blackbutt which has been treated with a clear, satin polyurethane finish.

Timber Windows and Doors

The timber used for windows and doors is dressed ironbark. This is a hardwood timber and a recycled product which was sourced from a factory in Sydney, where it was formerly the floor and ceiling joists. It is an extremely hard wearing and very heavy timber to use in carpentry.
