Royal Botanic Gardens re-opens

The Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne (RBGC) announced today that it will re-open to the public on Friday 15 April.

The Gardens has been closed to the public since 1 April, when ten days after a prescribed burn an area of vegetation re-ignited, despite regular patrolling. The prescribed burn had become a problem on 22 March when it spread and burnt a larger area than planned.

The fire was put out by the CFA and RBGC staff. The RBGC is appreciative of the strong partnership built up with the CFA, who worked closely with RBGC staff to contain the fire.

Since the fire was put out, RBGC staff have been evaluating any damage and working to make the Gardens safe for visitors. Some picnic tables at the Stringybark Picnic Area were damaged and there has been damage to some trees. The Stringybark Picnic Area is temporarily inaccessible to the public, while RBGC staff continue to work in that area.

Visitors are invited to return to the Gardens. There are temporary toilets at the overflow car-park and many of the walking tracks remain open.
