Visitor Centre background information
Visitor Centre
The Visitor Centre features the Visitor Information service, and ticketing, the Gardens Shop, a café and gallery space, as well as a dramatic stepped and ramped entrance into the Australian Garden.
Designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects, the Melbourne-based architectural practice was chosen unanimously by a panel of judges for its innovative and elegant design.
Set among the treetops, the Visitor Centre caters for visitors to both the bush-land experience of the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne and the Australian Garden.
The weathered timber-clad building has been designed to give a tree-top experience for visitors, offering a tantalising glimpse of the vistas of both the bush land, the new, highly landscaped Australian Garden, and at the same time ensuring that the existing ecology of the site is retained.
The Visitor Centre has been designed to follow Ecologically Sustainable Development principles.
The Gardens Shop
The Gardens Shop is the place to shop for botanically-inspired home-wares and gifts.
The Gardens Shop is packed with gorgeous offerings including stationery, skin care products, CDs, home-wares, children’s books, games, toys, clothing, an extensive selection of gardening and horticultural books, and one of the largest ranges of greeting cards in Melbourne.
The Royal Botanic Gardens has worked with local suppliers and manufacturers to develop an exclusive range of botanically-themed products. Products that have been developed include greeting cards, apparel, framed prints, conserves and chutneys, mugs, skin care, stationery, and postcards.
Royalties from all products assist the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne to advance the knowledge and enjoyment of plants, and to foster their conservation.
Boonerwurrung Café
The Boonerwurrung Café, with enticing views over the Australian Garden, offers delicious meals, as well as coffee, tea and light snacks.
The Café is open from 10am to 4pm.
