Friends' scholarships for Royal Botanic Gardens Board Staff

At the 25th Birthday Celebration Cocktail Party of the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne on Wednesday 14 March 2007, the President, Mrs Janet Thomson announced the introduction of the Friends’ Scholarship Scheme for Royal Botanic Garden (RBG) Staff.

The Friends’ Scholarships to the value of $10,000 per annum will be awarded to aid the professional development and skills of selected staff members.

Applications for the Friends’ Scholarships will be invited shortly and will be open to all permanent full-time and part-time employees of the RBG Board at Melbourne, Cranbourne and ARCUE (Australian Centre for Urban Ecology).

The first recipients of the Friends’ Scholarships (to be taken up in 2008) will be announced at the Friends’ Annual General Meeting to be held on Monday 19 November 2007.

The Friends’ Scholarship Scheme has been developed in close consultation with Dr Philip Moors, Director and Chief Executive of the Royal Botanic Gardens Board and with the Trustees of the Friends’ Trust Fund.

In announcing the Scheme Mrs Thomson said:

“Since our foundation on 14 March 1982 the Friends have contributed over $1.3 million in Grant funds to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne.  We are pleased and proud to launch The Friends’ Scholarship Scheme to further strengthen the bonds that exist between the RBG Board, its staff and the Friends.”

Welcoming the Friends' generous initiative in establishing this scholarship, Dr Moors said that it will bring real benefits to the Gardens and to its staff, and shows again the wonderful support the Melbourne Gardens receives from the Friends.
