Growing Friends

The Growing Friends propagate a great variety Australian native plants that have been sourced from the Gardens. The plants are grown from cuttings and seed, mostly supplied by the Gardens gardening staff.

Plants are used for educational purposes, and for raising funds for selected projects for the Gardens:

  • small plants are grown as ‘give-aways’ to school students visiting the Gardens (organised by the Gardens Education Services).
  • regular plant sales are held at the Nursery throughout the year with special days for Friends and staff, and separate days for the general public.
  • the City of Casey purchases plants from the Growing Friends for their ‘Green Web’ revegetation program in the Casey and Cardinia area, and as ‘give-aways’ for Arbor Week.

Working together, as well as having morning tea and lunch together, in a natural open-air setting, accompanied by the sounds of local birds, is a very enjoyable and healthy activity.

When we meet

The Growing Friends meet at our nursery, adjacent to the RBG Cranbourne depot, from 10am to 2pm:

  • on the 3rd Wednesday of the month and (for those who wish to)
  • on each Thursday of the month (excepting the week of the Wednesday meeting).

All are welcome. For enquiries contact:

Marjanne Rook on 9769 7881 or at marjannerook@iinet.net.au
Don Dower on 9736 2309 or at djdower@fastmail.fm

News update

The Growing Friends Nursery is now open for sales to Friends only (you will need to show your membership card) on our four Nursery working bee days each month - the 3rd Wednesday, and the 1st, 2nd and 4th Thursday. Come and buy plants at your leisure, as well as see some of the work we are doing.

The Nursery is open for visits and sales to Members on working bee days

  • March: Thursdays 1, 8, 15, 29 & Wednesday 21
  • April: Thursdays 5, 12, 26 & Wednesday 18
  • May: Thursdays 2, 9, 23 & Wednesday 15

We have a good selection of grevillea and eremophila, and our anigozanthos range from tiny to large species. Closer to the sale dates, a stocklist can be forwarded to you on request by email. Contact Marjanne or Don.

The preparation for our new nursery has progressed somewhat, as the site has been levelled and gravelled. Our working space will be bigger and better and best of all, weatherproof. We hope you will all come to visit us there when it is ready. As is our current one, it is in the Depot area.

Charlie Mensch, out long-term pot-washer, had to take some time off due to a serious fall. We miss you Charliet and expect to see you back in our new nursery, even if you don't want to wash pots!
